数ある稲川淳二の怪談の中でも群を抜いて長く、また現在も進行中という稲川の怪談の中でも異例のものである。稲川自身の著書で自分のお気に入り恐い話のランキング1位に挙げるほど内容の恐さには定評がある。ただし稲川がこの話をテレビ等ですると様々な怪奇現象が起きたことから、本人は今では口にしたくないと語っている。99年のある講演では、「どこからが怪談で、どこからが現実なのかという話になってしまう」と語っている。
